CBAM for Indian steel and aluminium exporters
Short answer: Iron, steel and aluminium products are the largest group of Indian exports covered by CBAM. Exporters should map products to EU CN codes, collect production, energy and raw-material evidence per installation, calculate embedded emissions with the official methodology, and be ready for verification.
Why steel and aluminium are the front line
Iron, steel and aluminium are carbon-intensive and are among the sectors CBAM covers. They are also major Indian exports to the EU, so many producers, re-rollers and processors are already receiving data requests from buyers.
What to collect, by process
| Area | Data |
|---|---|
| Production | Tonnes produced per product and per installation, per period |
| Fuel | Coal, coke, gas, diesel and other fuel consumption with invoices |
| Electricity | Useful for your own records, but indirect (electricity) emissions are outside CBAM scope for iron, steel and aluminium; only direct emissions count |
| Raw materials | Scrap, sponge iron, pig iron, alumina and ingots purchased, with supplier data where available |
| Process | Furnace type (blast, electric arc, induction), anode and reductant use |
Common pitfalls
- Scrap-based and ore-based routes have very different emissions. Record which you use.
- Processors who buy semi-finished steel or aluminium need their supplier's emissions data too.
- Heating and cooling produced outside the installation still count as direct emissions, so record it.
- Records spread across plants and spreadsheets with no audit trail.
Prepare for verification early
Verification is done per installation by an accredited verifier, who looks for consistency between meter data, invoices and the reported figures. Organising evidence now saves time and cost later.
How CarbonDocket helps
CarbonDocket reads your invoices and bills, organises evidence once, applies the published calculation methodology, and shows every figure beside its source so your team can verify before anything is reported.
Frequently asked questions
Is Indian steel affected by CBAM?
Yes, if it is exported to the EU, directly or through traders, and its customs code is on the CBAM list. Iron and steel is one of the covered sectors.
Do aluminium exporters need CBAM data?
Yes. Aluminium products listed in CBAM require embedded emissions data, which EU importers will ask you to provide.
What data do steel exporters need for CBAM?
Production tonnes, fuel and electricity use with evidence, raw-material purchases, and the production route used, per installation.
